Home Care: Bandage or Cast

 Daily Monitoring
  • Inspect the bandage/cast: It must remain clean and dry at all times. Examine it every day.
  • Check the position: You should always be able to see your pet’s toes. If the cast or bandage appears to be slipping down, please contact us immediately.
  • Examine the toes and skin: Ensure they are clean, dry, not painful, not swollen, and neither too cold nor too hot. Also check the surrounding skin for signs of irritation or sores.
  • General monitoring: Pay special attention to their food intake, as well as the regularity of their bowel movements and urination.
 Protection & Activity
  • Elizabethan collar is mandatory: Ensure your pet does not lick or chew the cast/bandage. Wearing the collar is necessary at all times until re-evaluated by the veterinarian.
  • Strict rest: Rest must be observed until the cast/bandage is removed. Running, jumping, and vigorous play must be strictly avoided.
  • Walking assistance: It is normal for your pet to walk on 3 legs for a few days. You can encourage them to put weight on their cast/bandage by walking them very slowly.
 Follow-ups & Appointments
  • Weekly re-evaluation: A check of the cast/bandage with a member of our team is recommended once a week. Note that it may be necessary to change or replace it.
  • Follow-up X-ray: Scheduled in 2 to 4 weeks depending on the veterinarian’s recommendations (fees apply). The cast/bandage might then be removed. Depending on the healing of the fracture, a new cast, bandage, or splint might be applied to continue treatment (fees apply).
 IMPORTANT FOR RE-EVALUATION DAY

On the day of their appointment, your pet will likely receive sedation and will stay with us for the day.

  • Fasting: They must be fasted starting from midnight the night before (water can, however, be left available without restriction).
  • Arrival at the clinic: You can bring them to the hospital the same morning or the evening before.
  • Appointment: Please schedule this day in advance with our receptionist.
