Dehydration occurs following excessive water loss or decreased thirst. Left untreated, it can cause severe internal damage.
Golden rule: If vomiting, temporarily remove water and food. Encouraging intake irritates the stomach and worsens loss.
ASSESSING DEHYDRATION
[ + ] The Mouth: Dry gums/tongue, thick sticky saliva.
[ + ] The Eyes: Dry or appearing sunken into sockets.
[ + ] The Skin: Pinch gently. Slow return = moderate. No return = critical.
✔ WHAT TO DO?
[ – ] If mild & no vomiting: Offer small amounts of water.
[ – ] Consult immediately if: Moderate/severe, lethargic, in pain.
[!] AVOID
➤ DO NOT let drink large amounts at once.
➤ DO NOT give dry food without vet approval.
